Just a few years ago, food trucks were the “IT” thing in Austin. Every week there was a new food truck opening, the best food in the city came from trucks and it wasn’t an event unless the best trucks were a part of it. Although food trucks are still a big part of Austin’s culinary culture, development and land costs are starting to push the food trucks out of the market. The best part of the food truck lots, were the diverse selection of food available. No matter how large your group, there was always something available. With food trucks slowly disappearing, what’s going to fill the void for those of us living in Austin?
Food Trucks Are So Last Year!
Food Halls are becoming the latest big trend sweeping across the US. Essentially an upscale and super-sized food court, Food Halls offer a wide range of choices from all over the world. From Atlanta’s Ponce City Market and to New York’s Gotham West Market, Food Halls are offering the best the culinary world has to offer.
In 2017, Austin will be joining this trend. The Austin Food Hall will take over the One Congress Plaza’s Lobby at 111 Congress and will be open for lunch, happy hour, dinner and on the weekends. There will be communal tables for patrons and an outdoor plaza for dining al fresco. The new Food Hall is supposed to break ground in September 2015 and is expected to open in 2017.
