One of the fastest growing segments of alternative learning in Austin is Charter Schools. Currently there are over 100 Charter Schools in the Austin Metro Area serving more than 20,000 students. These publicly funded schools are becoming more and more popular because of their freedom in curriculum and their ability to be geared toward a student’s specific skill set. Charter Schools are free, but similar to private schools, they can require an application and some can have a stringent selection process.
What is a Charter School?
Charter Schools are classified as tuition free public schools. They are designed to be open to all students that want to attend, but sometimes admissions can exceed the targeted enrollment. Each charter school is governed by its own community, which allows teachers to be more cutting edge and inventive with curriculum.
How Do My Kids Apply?
Charter schools are set up to be open to all children that want to attend. However, in some cases, applications exceed the number of spots that are available at the school. When the demand exceeds availability, enrollment is then determined by a random public lottery. There are also some charter schools that are geared toward a specific skill set or toward a special need child. In these cases, schools can be more selective.
