If you’re looking for a house for your pup, you’re not alone. A recent SunTrust Survey showed that 33% of millennial-aged Americans (ages 18 to 36) say the desire to have a better space or yard for a dog influenced their decision to purchase their first home. In fact, dogs were the 3rd most common motivator for purchase among this age group.
And we have to agree; not only did someone here at Eleven Oaks Realty fall into this category, but we see this come up with many of our clients. The good news is that Austin is one of the best cities for dogs in America so there are plenty of choices for housing. In addition to being a no-kill city since 2010, there is a long list of apartments in the area that have no breed restrictions.
And if you’re ready to buy, there are plenty of dog-approved neighborhoods in Austin. To determine what is “dog-approved,” we considered proximity to off leash dog parks, walkability of the neighborhood and lot sizes. Here is our list of the best Austin neighborhoods for dogs.

Bouldin Creek is one of South Austin’s most walkable neighborhoods, therefore dogs that live in Bouldin Creek will probably see many more walks than those that live in a less walkable neighborhood. There is always something to do along S 1st or South Congress and many Bouldin Creek dogs get to go along for the walk. Adopting a dog can sometimes be hard, especially if you don’t know where to go.
Bouldin Creek homes sit on smaller lots, between 1/10 and ⅓ acres, but most of the homes also have a much smaller footprint, leaving room for a dog to play. Many Bouldin Creek dogs frequent Auditorium Shores Dog Park (off leash) located at the north end of the neighborhood. With access to Lady Bird Lake, doggies that love to swim look forward to this trip.

Clarksville, located just west of Downtown Austin, is another favorite neighborhood among Austin’s dogs and are especially grateful their owners chose a Clarksville home instead of a Downtown Austin condo. Even though Clarksville lots are fairly small (1/10 – ⅓ acre lots), it sure beats a condominium lobby and concrete. Clarksville is also a very walkable neighborhood, so these dogs likely see a lot of leash time. Also, West Austin Park and Wading Pool (another off leash dog park) is located smack dab in the middle of the neighborhood and is a favorite spot among Clarksville doggies.
