Best Austin Neighborhoods for Shopping Winner: Great Hills
With both The Arboretum and The Domain just 2 and 4 miles from Great Hills respectively, Great Hills wins the award for the best neighborhood for shopping. The Arboretum is the closer shopping hot spot, located at the southeast corner of Great Hills and is a beautiful outdoor mall. There you’ll find upscale retailers like Coldwater Creek, Jos. A. Bank, Saks 5th Ave, Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware as well as dining options like Eddie V’s, Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang’s and Amy’s Ice Cream.

The Domain is Austin’s newest shopping area. It is currently home to Nieman Marcus, Macy’s, Dillards, Apple, Banana Republic, BCBG, Coach, Cole Haan, Louis Vuitton, Lucky Jeans and Michael Kors and newer phases, expected to be complete in 2012, will only offer more upscale shopping choices. The Domain was developed in hopes of becoming Austin’s second Downtown and I would have to say they are well on their way.

Located in Northwest Austin, near the intersection of 360 and 183, Great Hills is not only a perfect location for shopping, but its also a great location to get to anywhere in Austin in just about 20-30 minutes. Homes in Great Hills were built in the 1980s and 1990s and are surrounded by mature landscaping, a characteristic most residents appreciate. Also, Great Hills feeds into two very good school districts. Homes in Austin ISD attend Recognized schools and homes located in Round Rock ISD attend Exemplary Schools.

Best Neighborhoods for Shopping: Runners Up
The above three neighborhoods are the neighborhoods we feel are the best neighborhoods for shopping in Austin. But, we realize these neighborhoods won’t be ideal for everyone. Here are three neighborhoods that we felt should be mentioned in this list.
Best Neighborhoods for Shopping Runner Up: Champions Forest
Champions Forest is located halfway between The Domain and The Arboretum. Location wise, Champions Forest is much closer to shopping than much of Great Hills. But, the reason it didn’t make our top 3 was because its a smaller neighborhood with very few homes for sale. Champions Forest was built by David Weekley in the 1990s and early 2000s. Kids in Champions Forest attend Recognized AISD schools.

Best Neighborhoods for Shopping Runner Up: Preserve at Barton Creek
The Preserve at Barton Creek is located just about a mile from The Hill Country Galleria off Highway 71 in Southwest Austin. Surrounded on all sides by Barton Creek Preserve, there is no more room to build in this gated neighborhood. The homes were built in the early-mid 2000s, have 4,000 – 5,500 sq ft of living space and sit on spacious 1-2 acre lots. Children who live in the Preserve at Barton Creek attend top rated Lake Travis ISD schools. The Preserve at Barton Creek didn’t make the list of the top 3 because there are few homes and therefore have much less inventory than other larger neighborhoods.

Best Neighborhoods for Shopping Runner Up: Treemont
Treemont is located 1 mile from Barton Creek Square Mall in West Austin just off MoPac. Treemont would be the perfect choice if you’re looking for a suburban setting near Downtown. Built in the late 1990s, Treemont homes range in size from 2,300 – 5,000 sq ft. Many residents love the 40 ft trees and views of the Austin Skyline. Plus, Treemont is in the prestigious Eanes ISD. Treemont didn’t make our top 3 only because we didn’t have room for 4. But, its definitely worth checking out.
