Austin is known for being a great city for residents and tourists alike. So if you don’t have a tropical vacation planned this summer, take a look at our recommendations for your best Austin staycation!
Adults Only
Stay. Kimpton Hotels has long been known as a fun and friendly boutique offering. Their Austin outpost, the Hotel Van Zandt, is a perfect place to crash without the kids. Located on prime Rainey Street, you’ll still feel like part of the party without having to actually venture out.
Eat. If you’re looking for something truly sophisticated, head to Counter 3. FIVE. VII. At their 25-seat chef’s counter you can enjoy a fixed course meal, presented by the chefs themselves. The seasonal fare is a true dining experience.
Play. Grab a drink on 6th Street, but spare yourself the crowds at The Driskill Bar. This lounge feels like classic Texas and often has live music. Comfortable seating, classic cocktails and the best truffle popcorn in town will help you unwind.
Family Fun
Stay. Make the kids feel like celebrities at the Hyatt Regency Austin. Located just south of downtown with a prime location on Lady Bird Lake, they can either lead the family on a walk around the lake or hit the pool.
Eat. Skip the weekend line and head to one of our favorite brunch/breakfast spots: Snooze. The kids are sure to love the pancakes and there are plenty of adult options on the menu. We’re particular fans of their smoked cheddar hollandaise sauce.
Play. If you’ve never been to Schlitterbahn, you might not understand the hype of the water park but we guarantee it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser. The park originally opened in 1979, but expanded with another large section in 2011 that included The Falls, the world’s longest tubing river. Despite the dazzle of the new section, we prefer the original, shaded park.
Active Adventure
Stay. A definite splurge, Lake Austin Spa Resort will have you feeling miles away from it all. Offering a variety of fitness classes, spa services and healthy dining options, you won’t need (or want) to leave the property.
Eat. If you’re looking to head out to eat without ruining your diet head to Picnik Austin. Their restaurant on Burnett Road offers a delicious full butter coffee menu, bone broth, breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. They also cater to just about every dietary restriction you can imagine.
Play. Head to one of Austin’s bike trails for an outdoor ride. The Walnut Creek Hike & Bike Trail offers a paved 7-mile ride (14-mile loop) that caters to beginner and intermediate riders. There is only one point where you need to cross traffic so you can relax and enjoy the views.
Budget Friendly
Stay. For those with more flexibility, check out apps like Hotel Tonight and Airbnb to snag a great last-minute deal or house rental. Airbnb is a great way to find homes near the lakes or rivers without breaking the bank.
Eat. Veracruz All Natural’s migas tacos was voted one of the Top 5 Tacos in America by the Food Network and one of these are their Cesar Chavez location will only set you back about $3.
Play. The greenbelt is nearly unbeatable for free Austin entertainment. Spend the day hiking or pack a picnic and head to The Flats, a great spot to wade in the water. Enter at the Spyglass access point and turn left.
