If you’re a single woman in Austin looking to buy a house, like I was earlier this year, you probably think you’re in a very small group. Looking around at friends and family, I saw very few people like myself who owned their own home, but through my research I found that perception was not reality. In fact, single women now make up 17% of all home buyers (National Association of Realtors®). They are the second largest segment of home buyers and the fastest growing.
However, I never would have known any of this as a typical home buyer. When I bought my house in January of 2017, I was employed full-time as a corporate marketing director. I rented an apartment in a luxury building downtown and while I loved it, I knew I was throwing money away. I may have seemed like the average single home buyer, but I had one advantage: my family runs a real estate company and I hold a sales license. Even with that improved access to information and understanding of the process, it was still an incredibly hard decision for me to finally pull the trigger.
I bought a newly constructed home in East Austin and six months later, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. My new home has a gated yard, which let me adopt these little guys from Austin Pets Alive.
I’m a frequent user of RideAustin, so I still go out downtown, and found replacements for nearly all the amenities in my building. Best of all, I still come out ahead each month once I’ve paid all the bills and I’m building equity in a city I love.
Series: Home Buying for Single Women in Austin
That’s why I’ve created this blog series, to help other single women home buyers in Austin discover if home buying is right for them. Now as a full-time sales agent, I’m still amazed at the lack of information designed specifically for this segment. So, in the next few weeks, we’ll share all the advice and information that I found helpful in making my decision. We’ll cover questions like:
- How do I know if it’s the right time for me to buy? How will it affect my lifestyle?
- Do I really have time buy a home? How can I do this and take as little time off work as possible?
- Will I be able to manage the upkeep? Am I still going to be able to have fun or are my weekends going to be devoted to gardening and lawn work?
- How can I be 100% sure I have the money I need to do this?
- What are my options if something crazy happens with work and I have to move?
