We hear about the Green Movement, the Green Initiative, Green Homes, ……… but what does it all mean on a practical level? The simple truth is that conservation makes good sense; being a good steward of the environment has been an acknowledged goal by many societies throughout history. Waste – the profligate squandering of resources – desecrates the environment and to a certain extent demonstrates a selfish, immature disregard for other forces and byproducts of nature.
More Waste is Going to Cost Us
Turning resources into useful, beneficial products requires the expenditure of energy, and our energy costs are increasing at an alarming rate, so it seems the more we waste the more it’s going to cost us. That’s fact and not an opinion.
Without Conservation Energy Costs in Austin Will Skyrocket
Green had better not be a fad because if we ignore the benefits that conservation brings it’s going to get very expensive around here, especially in Austin where our population is exploding. In fact, Austin’s population has about doubled every 20 years. At the current rate, it’s on track to double in 10 years.
Resources Aren’t Keeping Up With Growth
Our water, electricity, natural gas supplies are being stretched; more demand, limited availability, uncertain supply means the cost will increase for all of us. Roads, sanitation and infrastructure in Austin are not keeping pace with our growing population. Could we be approaching the point where municipalities place restrictions on new construction, water permits and sewer connections? It’s happening in other areas.
Most Builders are Implementing Green Features
Building contractors and developers are implementing green features as they recognize the selling advantage garnered by a green built home and green subdivision. Homeowners are becoming aware that a green home is less expensive to own, more comfortable to live in and has greater resale attributes.
