Things to Do in Downtown Austin
Living downtown you are in the entertainment hub of Austin. Historic 6th Street and the Warehouse District offers restaurants, bars and clubs. Lady Bird Lake offers kayaking, canoeing and rowing. You have hike and bike trails that lead to popular Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool. There are also multiple parks within the downtown boundaries such as Waterloo Park, Duncan Park and House Park. Plus, you can always attend one of the multiple festivals or events in and around the downtown area.
Coffee in Downtown
Patika Coffee is a great little coffee trailer located on Second and Congress on weekdays from 8-4. The fan favorite is the brewed to order iced coffee. Juan Pelota is owned by Lance Armstrong and located next to Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop. They claim to have the most transcendent coffee in Austin and of course, their coffees are named after cycling heroes of yesteryear and viscous alpine climbs. They also serve smoothies and breakfast tacos. Emerald City Press is located on North Lamar and a serves a great cup of coffee but also serves beer and wine as well. They also have a drive through window for those of us on the go.
Places to Eat in Downtown
With as many great restaurants that are in and around the downtown area, it would be impossible to name them all. Here are just a small selection of restaurants in the area.
Stubbs Barbecue is legendary in these parts. The original Lubbock location entertained the likes of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Steve Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to name a few. Although the Lubbock location has shut down, Austin keeps the history of Stubb’s alive and well. If you want to experience history, listen to live music and have some fantastic barbecue, this is the place. Ironworks Barbecue is another fantastic barbecue place on Red River Street. Some say is the best barbecue in Texas. Worth a try to find out. The Jackalope is located on popular 6th street. Known as Austin’s most notorious old school “ dive bar”, The Jackalope has been voted several times has Austin’s best bar food. Bess Bistro, owned by Sandra Bullock, is a charming little restaurant located in the basement of the Stratford Arms building. The menu features a great mix of French and Southern American cooking. They also offer a great wine list. Eddie V’s is a seafood restaurant that is inspired by great seafood restaurants in New Orleans, Boston and San Francisco. Although Eddie V’s pride itself for being one of the top seafood restaurants in Austin, they also serve great USDA prime center cut steaks that are broiled to perfection.
Where to Work Out – Gyms Near Downtown
Pure Austin is the indoor gym for outdoor people. Pure Austin offers intense and unique classes not offered by most gyms. Gold’s Gym is located on West 6th Street. Very clean gym with top of the line equipment. Once of the benefits of Gold’s Gym is that once you are a member, most of the group classes are free. Weekday classes start as early as 6 a.m. Mecca Gym and Spa overlooks Downtown Austin and designed to be a urban wellness retreat.
