Named after Lewis Hancock, the mayor of Austin from 1895 to 1897, Hancock is located just east of historic Hyde Park and slightly northeast of the University of Texas. Like many of its neighbors, Hancock was largely developed following WWII with veterans utilizing the GI bill, but also has its share of historic homes and even some new construction. Perhaps the single most pivotal development in Hancock came when Hancock Shopping Center, Austin’s first mall, was built in 1963. It was only about 1/3 the size of present day malls and had no roof. But, it was far ahead of its time. It was subsequently redeveloped to include one of the biggest HEB’s in the area and now is home to 24 Hour Fitness and several other restaurants and retailers. Hancock residents take pride in the diversity of the neighborhood which makes it a very close knit community.
