Pemberton Heights was first developed in the late 1800s as Attorney General John Wood Harris’ farm. When the Fisher family inherited the farm, they built a bridge across Shoal Creek and began to develop the 12 original sections of Pemberton Heights in 1927. Originally planned as a section of “fancy cottages” priced between $3,500 and $4,000 and another of $150,000 mansions, Pemberton Heights was considered a “well balanced community.” Today, the neighborhood remains one of the most prestigious Central Austin neighborhoods, winning many awards. In 1998, Town and Country Magazine named Pemberton Heights one of the 25 Platinum Addresses in the US. In 2007, Pemberton Heights was listed – along with other Old Central Austin neighborhoods – as one of its “great places” neighborhoods by the American Planning Association. Wondering if Pemberton Heights is for you? Residents say they chose the neighborhood because they were drawn to the mature trees, large, open lots and proximity to Downtown Austin.
