Ridgelea is a small Central Austin neighborhood made up of five streets: Ridgelea Drive, Idlewild Road, Jefferson Street, W 39th St and Petes Path. Ask 10 Austin residents and 9 of them won’t know Ridgelea by name, something residents have grown to appreciate. Very few homes come up for sale in Ridgelea, which speaks to the fact that when you move there, you likely won’t leave. Homes are mostly bungalows built in the 1940s and 1950s that sit on wide streets lined with mature trees. Things to Do in Ridgelea
Ramsey Park and Pool
Ramsey Park and Pool is located just east of Ridgelea and offers a community pool and playground. The pool is surrounded by trees, which provides much needed shade in the summer time, is patrolled by lifeguards and best of all – free! With only one lane for lap swim, this pool is more of a kid/family pool.
The park – and even the bathrooms – are clean and they offer a place for BBQ and picnicking. They also have tennis and basketball courts for public use.
On Sundays at 2pm, adults head over for the weekly pickup softball game. The one downside is there is not a dedicated parking lot, but there is plenty of parallel parking on the surrounding streets.
Places to Eat in Ridgelea
Uchiko
The sister restaurant of the popular Uchi, Uchiko matches the service, quality and experience. Uchiko has a completely different menu than Uchi, though they still have sushi and sashimi. They call Uchiko – Uchi redefined. Austin definitely agrees. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who likes sushi who is not a fan of Uchiko. Stop by there next time you’re celebrating – or just feel like you need a splurge!
FoodHeads
FoodHeads, just a few blocks Southeast of Ridgelea, is a great lunch spot. They have all different types of sandwiches and several specials so you can try something new every time. The wrap around patio provides a great atmosphere for those looking to take a break in the middle of the day.
Lone Star Kolaches
5 blocks east of Ridgelea, you’ll come across a different breakfast/brunch place that serves kolaches (basically a pastry filled with fruit, meat or cheeses). If you like bread – you’ll love these. They fill them with all sorts of ingredients – eggs, potatoes, fruit, cream cheese, breakfast meats – so you’ll be sure to find one for any mood you’re in. Great, inexpensive breakfast.
Salvation Pizza
If you’re in the mood for thin crust pizza, look no further than Salvation Pizza (few blocks southeast of Ridgelea). They have great crust and sauce (white and red). And, if you can’t decide which sauce you’d like, you can have both – a great combination. Even transplants from the East Coast approve.
Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches
Another lunch spot close to Ridgelea is Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches which serves sub sandwiches. First you’d think sub sandwiches, how special can that be? Well at Jimmy’s you’ll find out. Anderson’s Coffee Company
If you live in Ridgelea, you probably know about Anderson’s Coffee Company. They sell all types of coffee accessories and great coffee. You can either buy a cup there (only $1 for a 12 ounce cup!) or buy some beans to take home for mornings you don’t feel like going out. Serving Austin for 30 years, Austin loves Anderson’s.
Teo
Some say they have the best gelato in Austin at Teo. Combine the gelato with the espresso and you just found a winning combination! Just slightly east of Ridgelea stop in there for breakfast or dessert – or hey maybe both?
Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf
Looking for something different than one of Austin’s local coffee shops – head over to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (just a few blocks east of Ridgelea). If you like to add different flavors to your coffee, they have a ton of them here and they’re free. White chocolate powder, cinnamon, milk chocolate powder – they have it all.
