The Milken Institute recently released their list of best performing cities and – no surprise here – Austin found it’s way to the top of that list. Milken noticed the top 25 performing US cities were either highly invested in the tech or energy industries (shale and natural gas particularly) and all had impressive growth. Here’s why Austin was named the #1 US city driving the future.
Austin Named #1 US City Driving the Future
For those of us that live in Austin, it isn’t surprising to see Austin as the top US city driving the future. Everywhere you go – Downtown or in the suburbs – you see construction, both residential and commercial as well as continued high demand for housing. Our job market is also red hot. Not many people are out of a job for longer than a few weeks max, even when they first move here. For all intents and purposes, our city is booming and thriving.
Why Austin?
Milken saw the Austin – Round Rock – San Marcos metro as a rising technology center with long time technology residents like Dell, National Instruments and Freescale, newbies like Apple, Google, Facebook and the growing group of startups near UT. Austin is also one of the most business-friendly cities with a low tax rate and low regulations. With the technology hub of jobs and an affordable cost of living (especially when compared to other tech hubs) Austin has attracted a lot of young professionals, which has contributed to the construction boom. And, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down either. Recently, Austin was named the best city for future job growth. Combine all of these factors and it’s pretty clear why Austin is poised to drive the future.

The four major Texas metros (Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas) are all booming metros. You’ll often see them on top lists of best cities to live for one reason or another. The interesting thing too is these cities are all totally different, even though they are in the same state. No matter what type of city you like, you’ll likely find it somewhere in Texas.
