In a recent study by SmartAsset, Austin’s very own Round Rock was named the 14th Safest City in America. According to SmartAsset, they were motivated by the increase in violent crime that has been reported across the US over the past few years to identify the safest cities in America.
How Were Cities Evaluated?
SmartAsset examined data on 200 of the largest cities across the US on the following five metrics: violent crime, property crime, vehicular mortality rate, drug poisoning mortality rate and the percentage of the population engaging in excessive drinking.

Here is the list of the top 15 safest cities in America:

- McKinney, TX
- Santa Clarita, CA
- Sunnyvale, CA
- Glendale, CA
- McAllen, TX
- Cary, NC
- Santa Clara, CA
- Plano, TX
- Torrance, CA
- Fremont, CA
- San Jose, CA
- Laredo, TX
- Round Rock, TX
- College Station, TX
Most of the Safest Cities Concentrated in Texas and California
Interestingly, most of the safest cities in America are concentrated in Texas and California. If you go further down the list, you’d find 80% of the 25 safest cities in America are concentrated in Texas and California.
What Makes Texas Safest Cities Different than California’s Safest Cities?
Well, for one, Texas safest cities are more affordable than California’s safest cities. Though our housing prices have increased, they are still not at the level of California’s. Plus, our other expenses are overall lower as well.
Mid Size Cities are The Most Safe
SmartAsset found mid size cities with populations between 140,000-286,000 the most safe. Only one city, San Jose, had a population above 500,000 and still been able to make the top 35.
