SoCo or South Congress is not just a neighborhood, but a state of mind. Actually, it’s not a neighborhood at all. SoCo is a vibrant district full of hip bars, eclectic shopping, great restaurants, historic clubs and just a great place to walk around and people watch. There are some apartments and condos on South Congress itself, but a lot of people that say they live in SoCo, either live in high priced Travis Heights or more affordable Bouldin Creek Neighborhoods. Things to Do in SoCo – South Congress
The SoCo area is the perfect area to walk around and experience the Austin Vibe. You can’t beat the view of the Capital standing on South Congress and looking north towards downtown. You are in walking distance to Town Lake and the hike and bike trails. You can spend the evening watching the largest urban bat colony take flight nightly (March until November) from underneath the South Congress Bridge. There is plenty of thrift, vintage and ultra hip shopping up and down South Congress Avenue. Uncommon Objects started out as a small antique store in 1991 and now has grown to a one of the kind emporium. They are best described as “your eccentric uncle’s attic on steroids. Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds is a store offering a carnival atmosphere and crammed full of adult and children’s costumes, masks, wigs, props, makeup, accessories, etc…..On the First Thursday of every month South Congress turns into a block party suitable for all ages. The streets holds special events and live music. Stores run specials and offer free drinks. The restaurants and bars in the SoCo area offer specials as well.
Places to Eat in SoCo – South Congress
Vespaio is a bistro inspired cafe serving tasty pasta dishes, wood fired pizzas, an extensive wine menue and incredible desserts and pastries. Gueros is a taco bar that is housed in a former feed and seed store from the 1800’s. Gueros serve homemade corn tortillas and specialty dishes such as their Alambres and tacos al pastor. They also have a full service cantina serving iced cold cervezas and hand shaken margaritas. Home Slice Pizza is an independent neighborhood pizza joint serving New York style pizza by the slice or the whole pie.
Coffee in SoCo – South Congress
Jo’s is a small coffee shop with covered outdoor seating serving homemade baked goods, great sandwiches, breakfast tacos, all the classic hot coffee drinks plus their own iced coffee called the iced Turbo.
