Shady Hollow consists of about 2,000 homes near the southernmost boundary of Travis County just west of Interstate Hwy. 35, a neighborhood that serves as a bridge for those homeowners wanting both the convenience of the city and the tranquility of nature. It is a close-knit community where family is the focal point and quality of life is paramount. Shady Hollow has great community-owned amenities which include a large community center, swimming pool, 4 tennis courts, two basketball courts, four parks and playscapes and two nature trails. A Mom’s Club, children’s swim team, and summer tennis tournament are just some of the neighborhood’s family-oriented activities – there’s even a special section in the newsletter for teenage job seekers. Shady Hollow also has an active Homeowner’s Association that proactively seeks to preserve property values and maintain a safe, comfortable neighborhood. Shady Hollow Neighborhoods
You may wonder why the map above is shaded in different colors. We shaded it like that to show you the different neighborhoods that make up Shady Hollow.
Developments in the area include the original Shady Hollow subdivision, plus Barker Ranch at Shady Hollow, Estates of Shady Hollow, Enclave at Shady Hollow, and Villages of Shady Hollow. While the neighborhoods were founded separately and operate under different homeowner associations, they generally are known collectively as “Shady Hollow.”
Shady Hollow
The original Shady Hollow development is shaded in orange. You’ll find homes built from the mid 1970s to the mid 1990s. These homes range in size from 1,500 sq ft – 3.500 sq ft.
The Estates of Shady Hollow
The green area shows The Estates of Shady Hollow. Homes were built from about 1985 – 1995. Here you’ll find acre plus lots with homes anywhere from 2,000 – 4,500 sq ft.

Southland Oaks
The blue area shows Southland Oaks, sometimes called The Villages of Shady Hollow. Depending on who you talk to, Southland Oaks is sometimes considered its own neighborhood and its sometimes considered part of Shady Hollow. Legally it has its own name, but if you drive the area, the signs will all say Shady Hollow.
Southland Oaks homes were built from about 1994 – 2002. These homes range in size from just under 1,400 sq ft – 4,500 sq ft and sit on ¼ – 1 acre lots. Southland Oaks is the Shady Hollow neighborhood with the most variation in home and lot sizes.

Golf Near Shady Hollow
The nearest golf to Shady Hollow is Grey Rock Golf Course. To get there, head to Slaughter Lane and go west to MoPac. Then take that to Highway 45 and you’ll see Grey Rock. Formerly known as Circle C Golf Club, Grey Rock is a pay as you play course with membership options.
Walkability of Shady Hollow
Shady Hollow is not the most walkable neighborhood in Southwest Austin. However, there are several amenities within 2 miles that you’ll end up frequenting. If you’re looking for a neighborhood where you can walk around or run, Shady Hollow is it. If you’re looking for a neighborhood where you can walk out your front door to shopping and restaurants, Shady Hollow isn’t it.
Grocery Shopping Near Shady Hollow
The closest grocery store is Randalls on Brodie Lane and Slaughter. You can also try HEB if you prefer, which is on Slaughter Lane just west of Brodie. For larger runs, head to Costco on William Cannon. The closest Walmart is just off 290 at Brodie.
Things to Do Near Shady Hollow
There are several things to do near Shady Hollow. For starters, get involved in the homeowner’s association. They have several activities throughout the year, which many residents enjoy. You can also bring the kids to Shady Hollow Park where you can play tennis, swim, picnic or play in the park. If you like biking, head to The Veloway, a 3 mile, car free, paved road for bikers and roller bladers.
Places to Eat Near Shady Hollow
Galaxy Cafe at Brodie and Slaughter is a popular choice for those looking for good, fast casual food. They serve sandwiches, burgers, salads and breakfast. Maudie’s Hacienda is a popular choice for TexMex. Escarpment Village at Escarpment and Slaughter has several choices – pizza, thai, bistro, bar, pub – you name it.
Coffee Near Shady Hollow
For Starbucks and Texenza, head to Brodie Lane and Slaughter Lane. For a more local shop, check out Chuck’s Coffee Shop on Manchaca Road. You can also try one of my personal favorites, Scooter’s near William Cannon and MoPac.
Where to Work Out – Gyms Near Shady Hollow
The most popular gym near Shady Hollow tends to be Austin Fitness Center on Slaughter Lane. They have no contracts, no hassles and great prices. And, you’ll even get a discount with a family membership. Another gym nearby is Planet Fitness, also on Slaughter. For a full service gym, try Lifetime Fitness at MoPac and William Cannon.
